Degrees of freedom (DOF) are the given possibilities of movement. There are 6 degrees of freedom within three-dimensional space and to display these we use the typical, axial description of space with x, y and z. The 6 degrees of freedom are divided into 3 linear movements along the axes and 3 rotational movements around the axes.
On our website you may find often the term 3DOF or 6 DOF in connection with our active vibration isolators, which shall describe the number of movements that our device is capable of actively isolating. A 6-DOF-device can, of course, actively isolate in all 6 degrees of freedom. Whereas, a 3-DOF-device may only actively isolate the vertical, linear movement and the corresponding rotations (see illustration).
